Comcast added five new high-definition channels to its lineup in the Philadelphia metro area, which includes surrounding suburbs and northern Delaware, bringing its HD count (including pay and local channels) to 31. The five HD nets are: AMC HD, Animal Planet HD, CNN HD, History Channel HD and TLC HD. By the end of the year, Comcast plans to make more than 1,000 HD movies and TV shows available on its video-on-demand services in all markets.

While thin has definitely been in lately with some flatscreen models becoming no thicker than two of your finger, we haven’t heard of a TV mount being marketed as the “industry’s thinnest”. Chief’s new Thinstall Series features TV mounts with depths slim enough to accommodate even the thinnest LCD and plasma sets on the market. Take for instance the Thinstall PSMT2015, designed for Hitachi’s new UltraThin TVs, which are just 1.5″ thin. With a mount depth of 0.49-inches, it’s actually only one-third as “thick” as the Hitachi it supports.
The steel mounts can hold weights of up to 175 pounds, plenty of strength to hold up models that are as thin as an inch. They all feature a Glide Lock for easy install with no tools, lateral shift and an open wall plate eliminating much of the need to fiddle with electrical cord placement. Chief says that all of their Thinstall mounts are custom-made, and as new and thinner flat panels hit the market, they’ll be there to build the corresponding thin TV mounts.

Lets start with a great rumor, that Sony will be selling a 32-inch LCD set in Wal-mart stores for $699 this spring, with a possible price decrease to $648 if a rumored Wal-mart discount is included. This is the first time Sony will sell a 32-inch set for less than $700 and is part of the electronic giant’s strategy to bump mid-range Japanese brands such as Vizio and Olevia down a notch. With a slow US economy, the Bank of America is predicting that this is the first step in an all-out price war that will see LCD TV prices drop drastically. But not so fast.
All of the typical 32-inch models already sold in Wal-mart are already sold below the $699 price tag of the 720p Sony, plus LCD panel supply is going to be tight in 2008 with demand most likely exceeding supply. This doesn’t bode well for lower prices. It does move Wal-mart one step closer to being a dangerous competitor to the likes of Best Buy and Circuit City, especially as the digital TV transition draws closer and people flock to upgrade to a digital set. This could mean a price war down the line, but we don’t see it happening in 2008.

Satellite companies gained a victory Thursday when the Federal Communications Commission voted to allow them to phase in a requirement that they carry all HD signals in any market where they carry any after the Feb. 17, 2009, switch to digital TV by all full-power TV stations. The commission also ruled that DirecTV’s and Dish Network’s requirement to carry all TV stations in a market where they carry any extends to DTV signals just as it applies to analog TV stations. Satellite broadcasters will have four years to phase in delivery of local stations’ HD signals, the FCC said, explaining that it recognized the “unique” capacity constraints of satellite and accepted their argument that an immediate mandate would slow the rollout of HD service. Per that schedule, satellite broadcasters must carry TV stations’ HD signals in 15% of the markets in which they carry any HD signals by Feb. 17, 2010; 30% of those by Feb. 17, 2011; 60% by Feb. 17, 2012; and 100% by Feb. 17, 2013.

Daktronics Inc of Brookings, S.D., announced today that the University of Minnesota has chosen the company to design, manufacture and install state-of-the-art HD-X light emitting diode (LED) video display technology in the new home of Gopher football, TCF Bank Stadium. Installation of the scoreboard support structure is expected to begin in the fall of 2008, and the new integrated system will be up and running in time for the Gopher’s home opener against Air Force on Sept. 12, 2009. The main high definition video display, measuring approximately 48 feet high by 108 feet wide, will boast Daktronics HD-16 technology, the first of its kind in Big Ten Conference football. It will also be the second largest in all of college sports and only one of a handful of true-high definition LED displays in the country. Also featured in the auxiliary video display, Daktronics HD-X LED technology represents a new generation of large screen video. The product line features a number of industry advances including optimized pixel layout, improved contrast levels and enhanced viewing angles. After the war between the Blue-ray and HD is over is now time to take over. And looks like Sony is now finally getting in on the action itself, but not is US yet, only in Switzerland. While some of the details are lost in translation, it seems that if you buy either the BDP-S500 or BDP-S300 Blu-ray player before the end of March, you’ll then be able to send in your HD DVD player for Sony to recycle and receive a discount of 200 Swiss Francs (about $190), plus both the Spider-Man trilogy and Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy on Blu-ray. Not surprisingly, the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive and all computer HD DVD drives are excluded, and you’ll need the proof of purchase and cash receipt for your HD DVD player (purchased before February 29th) in order to take advantage of the offer. Hitachi today kicked off its “Thin Is In Motion” marketing campaign, which features two innovative promotional elements: a mobile truck tour and a hands on experience program. Hitachi has partnered with several high-end locations for product placements of its new ‘1.5′ family of HDTVs. Called 1.5 due to their ultra thin 1.5-inch depth, Hitachi’s displays were introduced in January and have already generated widespread consumer interest, along with industry awards and acclaim. Available this spring, the new 1.5 ultra thin displays from Hitachi will be available in multiple sizes ‘ 32′, 37′ and 42′ (and a 47′ available this fall) ‘ designed to provide consumers with a range of options for placement throughout the home. In addition to the experiential product placements, Hitachi has also kicked off a mobile truck tour. Beginning in March, four Hitachi-branded 17 foot trucks will travel the country to showcase the 1.5 displays. The trucks will each contain one 32′ black display, one 32′ white display and one 37′ black display that will all run high-definition content. The two 32′ models will be on pedestals that rotate so consumers can fully experience the thinness of the displays. The truck tour and product placements will run through the month of March and will travel to more than 75 cities. The campaign’s two innovative components were planned in partnership with Hitachi’s media, marketing and digital agency Initiative, part of the Interpublic Group of Companies.
